GUESS WHAT?............NO MATTER WHAT AGE OR STAGE YOU ARE AT THERE IS A MINISTRY HERE FOR YOU:Men's Fellowship - A ministry that addresses the issues of men in our society and tries to provide guidance and mentoring for the young men of our congregation and community. The Men's Fellowship hosts a huge Family Picnic in July as well as two Prayer Breakfasts and other spiritually building events. Br. Vincent Jarvis is the Men's Ministry President.
Moravian Women is the counterpart organization for the women. They are engaged not only in activities that provide development for their members but also for the wider church and community. Sister Avril Phillip is the president of this ministry.
Youth Fellowship is held on Fridays at 6:30 and is open to persons twelve and older. Through this ministry our young people have an opportunity to understand how God's word impacts on their lives and what is required of those who are Christians. Every effort is made to have the meetings and activities be a time of fun, fellowship and learning. Samantha Roberts is currently the president.
Health Fellowship, a ministry led by Sister Jean Straker- Tannis, focuses on bringing an awareness of health and its impact on life to our community. They provide regular blood pressure checks, hosts a community Health Fair and are the organizers of the Fitness Program. Some professional involvement in the Health field is the basic criteria for sharing in this ministry.
Sunday School provides the early opportunity for awareness and training in our Christian faith as well as in what is Moravianism and how that should be expressed in their daily lives. Through a dedicated team of teachers led by Pat Campbell, Ruth Ricketts, Vernalyn Rowe, Ingrid London, Ivalyn Jarvis, Chloris Hicks, Jean Straker-Tannis, Edith Valentine, Jason Brown and Grace Pieters, this important ministry is kept vibrant and relevant. Sunday School is held on Sundays at 10:15 am and there is always a snack available afterwards. We will arrange to pick up your child if you contact our office with this request.
VBS (Vacation Bible School) - A FREE summer program that is designed to bring an awareness of how Jesus Makes a difference in the lives of people. This makes heavy use of the Bible and is filled with activities both on our campus as well as in the adjoining Prospect Park and other commercial venues. This year VBS is from July 1 - 9. Send your child and don't be afraid to come along. You may assist as a teacher, cook or support volunteer. The VBS comes under the ministry of the Christian education Committee led by Sister Pat Campbell.
Mission Teams - Dedicated to serving God's people wherever those needs may be, from New York to Mississippi, Indiana to Florida. Having a particular building skill makes a tremendous difference but is not the only criteria for participation. A sense of urgency to help others and having time to dedicate to this ministry is that which matters most. A mission trip is planned for Gulfport, Mississippi from July 11 - 17.
Praise Dancers - One of the most recent additions to our worship experience is this very dynamic group that is open to young ladies of all ages. As they Practice on Saturday mornings at 10:00am, they learn that the dance ministry is not simply about displaying their ability to move artistically but that it is also using this medium to shed light on the gospel. They bring high quality performances to worship and special events and are always open to persons who share this interest. Choreographer and Artistic Director is Keisha Worrel.
Praise Team - This ministry focuses on making a joyful noise unto the Lord, combining contemporary and tradition praise song they are able to invoke a level of energy in our worship experience that is simply amazing...Just out of this world. The Praise team invites persons who love to praise God to be be part of their team which currently includes Antoinette Davidson, Margaret Williamson, Harriett Boyce, Cathy-Ann Bristol, Vickie Ellis, Juliet Mayers, Karlene Woodbine, Cerene O'kieffe and Garilyn Martin.
Chancel Choir - This Choir has the lead responsibility for enhancing the singing in our worship experiences. In addition, the Chancel Choir ministers with special items during worship and other special events. If you can sing and feel led to participate please call the church office at 718 856 2200 and leave a message for Mr. Winston Peart, our Choir President. Mr. Kurleigh Lowe is the Organist and Choir Director. Practices are held on Wednesdays at 7:30pm.
Soul Survivors - The intermediate choir of our congregation that is open to persons twelve to about the 'thirtyish' (lol) age group. The focus is on using contemporary Gospel Music to bring the gospel alive and make an impact, not only on our worship, but also on the lives of the choir members. We are especially inviting the young people in our community to be part of this very important ministry. Practice is held at 8pm on Fridays. Naoko Ono is the Director.
The Hus Boyz - A contemporary Gospel Band comprising Odinger Greene, Jermaine Francis, Andrew Peart, Davian Graham, Kenri Joseph and Kamaal Hall that brings new life to the word of God through the infusion of upbeat genres that will absolutely make you rock. The produced their first CD entitled 'Hold On' in 2007, copies of which are still available from our church office. You have to hear them to understand what I am talking about.
D.A.R.N. - Another budding group of itinerant musicians and vocalists. These are young ladies, Danielle Johnson, Renatta Pieters, Nardia Williams and Alysha Joseph who are all part of the Soul Survivors but find time to take their talents to the stage. If you have great vocal talent then there is certainly a place here for you. They are good!!!!!!
Junior Choir - Every church needs to have its youngest members use their talents to the glory of God. This choir takes persons from 3 years old up to twelve when they transition to another level. Their practice time on Fridays at 5:30 not only allows them to learn new songs and sing them in worship but also learn christian principles and ideals that will be with them for life. Director Kurleigh Lowe and Pat Campbell are making a special appeal to parents on the block to send out your children. It is a great break from the Play Station, XBox and the TV.
Ushers are persons who take the time to make sure that all visitors and members are provided with those directions and materials that will make the worship service an even more blessed experience. We have Junior and Senior Ushers and are always willing to have new ones. One of the finest Ushers in the world, Audrey Lewis, is our chief usher.
Greeters are the first faces of contact with our congregation. They try hard to ensure that there is always a warm welcome and bright smile when you come. For persons who have a knack for reaching out to others this is the perfect ministry. Jennifer Joseph, who epitomizes hospitality and joy as well as Alton Matthews, known for his bright, genuine smile are the persons who lead this ministry.
Multimedia Ministry - The use of modern media technology enhances the worship experience through music, graphics, animations, videos and even the very mundane task of displaying parking related notices. This is an important ministry that takes serious dedication We thank Sisters Carole Johnson, Lee Burke, Ivalyn Jarvis, Brendalee Willock-Maynard and Br. Rodney Francis for their involvement in this ministry and extend an invitation to persons who have a penchant for technology and would love to make an impact in this area to join the team.
Hospitality Ministry spearheaded by Sister Geraldine Forde - If you have a passion for entertaining and making persons comfortable and also providing nutritional support then this certainly is a ministry for you. We do not only feed the spirit but take good care of the body and this ministry of which you can be a part helps to facilitate that outcome.
Prayer Ministry This is a minsitry that underpins our entire effort at John Hus. We are mindful that without consistent and effective prayer...our best efforts will always come up short because the "effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person availeth much." Led by Elder Chloris Hicks, this ministry lifts up the concerns of our world, nation , community and church to God in intercession. If you have a prayer concern you may make a note and place it in the designated box at the back of the sanctuary or give us a call at the church office.
Visitation Ministry Reaching out to the sick and shut-ins wherever they may be, this ministry is intensely involved in ensuring that those who are no longer able to attend church or are dealing with illnesses are provided with spiritual nurture. Currently led by Elder Vincent Jarvis, the Visitation Ministry is playing a critical outreach role and you are welcome to be a part of it.
Free Computer Classes are open to the community on prescribed Saturday mornings at 10:00am. These classes are currently run by Sisters Ramona Faoye and Lee Burke and is aimed primarily at beginners and those who have felt somewhat intimidated by the computer.
Free Fitness Program: open to the community - Saturday morning at 8:00am. The classes are coordinated by the Health Fellowship Ministry, guided by Sister Jean Straker-Tannis and benefits from a certified Fitness Instructor. You just need to turn up: we will take it from there.
Sacristans ensure that our sanctuary is well maintained for worship and that the appropriate items are used for the related time of the Christian Year and also take care of the elements for the Holy Communion. Sister Eloine Cole heads this ministry.
Free Food Pantry - Our Food Pantry is run by the outreach Committee under the guidance of Antoinette "Tiddy" Davidson and is open to the public on the First Saturday of each month unless otherwise advertised. The program is totally underwritten by the church and provides culturally appropriate and appealing food items to the participants. The only criteria for participation is that names and addresses be provided. Distribution usually starts at 9:00am, although persons are usually in line before 7:00am. This is one area in which we do ask for your financial contribution to ensure that this ministry continues.
